Kitsap Mustang Club Presents

John and Ann Buckbee's

1970 Mach I

John and Ann Buckbee have been KMC members since the Clubs inception in 1988.  They reside in Port Orchard.   The Buckbee's have been active members in KMC, with John having served on the Board as President in 1993, as Vice President in 1998, and as Tech and Program Chair in both 1989 and 1997.  They have participated in many Club events and projects, plus attended several shows and parades!

How this beautiful 1970 Mach 1 came into their coral is a funny thing!  It happened while looking for a baby t-bird to purchase and restore. They have owned several mustangs over the years, most of which they restored, they decided that it would be fun and different to do something else. For 40 years of their marriage Ann talked about having a baby t-bird, and she did not like the new ones. So John started looking for one to buy and restore. He found one almost in the neighborhood (a 1955), and they went to look, at which time Ann stated she didn’t like it, so back to looking. A few weeks later John heard about a Mach 1 the owner was thinking of selling. John mentioned the fact to Ann, and they decided to take a look at it. As it turns out Ann also liked the sportroof style of the 69/70 mustangs, plus the color was calypso corral, which she liked. Looking at the car it was obvious that a past restoration had been attempted and lots of evidence of bondo was on the quarters, plus the car had a 100 foot paint job (looks good at 100 feet distance), and some rust was showing. (John's a sucker for projects like this) Ann said it was a cool car, so they made a deal and took it home, along with 2 pickup loads of parts. That included a NOS LH quarter and tail light panel.

The owner had bought this car in Houston, Texas in the early 80’s while going to school. It was his daily driver while he worked in Texas, California, and finally here in the northwest. Since the data plate was missing from the door they were not sure of the DSO, where the car was sold new. From research John knew the car had the original powertrain, and as he later discovered the engine and transmission were stamped with the cars VIN. As they progressed through the restoration, John sent off for a "Kevin Marti" report and a new door data plate. John was surprised to find out that the car was sold new in Renton, Washington at the ford dealer who is now known as Sound Ford. John started the restoration process by stripping the car down to the bare chassis and putting it on a rotisserie. Removed all the paint and undercoating from the engine compartment, trunk, and exterior. Primed all bare metal, and painted the undercarriage and engine compartment with POR-15. With the exception of final body and paint, John and Ann did all the rest. They added, changed, or removed the following:

Front seat upholstery has vermilion stripe instead of gray
Added front/rear spoilers
Added After market radio
Added posi-rear end with same ratio
Removed after market a/c
Changed to sun-x side windows
Added magnum 500 wheels
