Kitsap Mustang Club Presents:

George Coombs ~ 35th Anniversary GT Convertible

George Coombs 35th Anniversary Pony!

George and Mary Coombs joined the Kitsap Mustang Club in 1989.  George was our Club President in 1992.  The Coombs have taken their pony to as many shows and on as many Mustang road trips as they could.  They are often seen cruising with the Club in local parades.  George always takes part in the Washington State Adopt-a-Highway, Roadside clean-up program, of which KMC is a part of.   Their son-in-law, Phil, also lends a helping hand whenever possible with the Roadside clean-up and other Club activities.  Their son Richard helps our Club out whenever possible as well, and he is a member of Pierce County Mustang Club, of Tacoma.

In November of 1999, George (who had been admiring the 35th Anniversary Mustangs), decided that he really would enjoy owning one of the limited edition Mustangs (only 5,000 produced).  This decision would allow George to go on more of the Clubs extended trips and shows in comfort!  (Really it was so he could keep up with all of the other GT's).   George and his son, Richard spent quite a few days trying to locate a 35th Anniversary Mustang through local Ford dealers, which proved unsuccessful.  So Richard and George turned to surfing the internet to find the 35th Anniversary pony of choice!  George decided to make this quest a challenge!  He had wanted a white convertible with automatic transmission.  A phone call to a responsible person at Ford indicated that there were around 100 Mustangs produced that fit that criteria.

Richard and George continued to surf the internet and at about 6:00am on December 4th, 1999, they located a white GT convertible on autotrader.com.  They then called a local Ford dealership in Merissa, Illinois to confirm this advertised car was indeed a 35th Anniversary Edition Mustang, and that it was a convertible with automatic transmission.   It was the one!  Also, they found out it came equipped with all of the bells and whistles available for the 35th Anniversary Mustang!  This list of options include: GT components, color matched hood and side scoops, black hood stripe, black honeycomb in the back, special black and silver leather seats, Mach 60 sound system, and floor mats with 35th Anniversary logo.  The car only had 101 miles on the odometer!   WOW!  They found out that the car was built in April of 1999 and shipped to a dealer in Florida.  When it arrived to that dealership, the body panels in the rear had been damaged, so the dealer rejected delivery and sent it back to Ford to be repaired under warranty.  However, by the time that work was completed, the model year had ended and Ford then wholesaled the Mustang to the dealer in Illinois where George and Richard found it.

The next quest was to get the Mustang from Illinois to Tacoma by Christmas!  However, that dream did not pan out as the truck delivering the Mustang had mechanical trouble in Texas, delaying the delivery until the day after Christmas.  When George was told that the car was arriving at Richards house in the afternoon on December 26th, George came over and awaited his little pony's grand entrance.  At about 4:00pm the Mustang arrived and George was in place to make sure the truck driver used the proper amount of care when he removed the 35th Anniversary beauty off of the trailer!

Georges new pony will not be hard to spot around town!  It will be the white blur with license plate reading R35ANV, and driven by the man with the ear to ear grin on his face, having way too much fun!

George states that he is not sure why he held onto this Mustang as long as he did, but he sure is glad he did!  George also has a '66 Coupe in his Pony coral.  He claims to have found great enjoyment and friends in the Kitsap Mustang Club!  Sadly, Mary passed away in September, 1999.  Mary will always be remembered by all of the KMC members!
